Long before these mats existed, before the idea of Gennet Gear took shape, there was a woman, my mother, Gennet.
Her name means heaven, where she resides now after a long battle with cancer.
She was a visionary, an artist, a creator.
In the heart of Eritrea, she designed textiles unlike any other, drawing inspiration from the world around her, the graceful sway of trees, the delicate curves of leaves, the intricate lines of flower petals. She had an eye for beauty, a gift for blending patterns, and a relentless passion for bringing her visions to life.
Her designs became the fabric of celebration. Women draped themselves in her creations for weddings and special gatherings, wrapped in colors and patterns.
When I created these mats, I wanted to continue her story in a way that felt true to both of us. I wanted to fulfill her dreams and aspirations that she was interrupted from reaching.
As a yoga teacher, movement is my art. So I took the patterns she once designed for fabric and reimagined them on a new canvas, one that moves, bends, and breathes.
Each mat carries a name close to my heart, the names of my siblings, the people who shared in this legacy with me.
To own one of these mats is to embrace something far beyond a mere surface for your practice. It is to recognize and honor the finer things in life, sophistication, the beauty of craftsmanship, the elegance of nature’s patterns, the depth of tradition.
It’s for those who see art in every detail, who understand that inspiration doesn’t just live in the strokes of a paintbrush, but in the natural world, in culture, and in the stories we carry with us.
